Poznámky / Notes
Ahoj is originally a boating greeting. It comes from English "a hoy" lodička, a small boat.
Pozdravy (Greetings)
The most frequent greeting is „Dobrý den". Use it when you are making contact, entering a room, train compartment, public areas such as waiting rooms, small shops, restaurants etc. We can use it any time during the day. In the evening, we use „Dobrý večer" and on leaving, „Dobrou noc" instead. The universal formal greeting for leaving is „Na shledanou".
Informal greetings in families, among friends, students etc. are „Ahoj", less frequently „Čau" or „Nazdar". All these are used both on entering and leaving.
